Brian Wilson once sang that he wasn't made for these times, and maybe that's true. Certainly he's faced his share of sorrow, he's never been comfortable with the public, and often his most personal and unique work has met with indifference or outright derision. His most beautiful melodies are joyful in presentation and form, but with an inescapable melancholy and vulnerability, a sound which expresses the excitement and hope of life while acknowledging its pain. A youthful outlook, filled with exuberance and optimism, but with a heart which aches with the suddenness and intensity of your first skinned-knee. Besides his enduring genius, I hold Brian as a hero of perseverance. His life has dealt him more crushing blows than many of us could manage, but he keeps coming out of his bed to face another day. His music moves me deeply, and it's a privilege to share my own humble interpretations with the world. Made for them or not, how lucky we are that these times are when we've had him.
